Over 60% of Spanish families have difficulty making ends meet

Families struggling to make ends meet reached 60% in 2008, growing 3.2 percentage points from 56.8% a year earlier, as seen from the Living Conditions Survey released today by the Institute National Statistics (INE).
Thus, families in difficulty reached levels seen only in the years 2004 and 2006. In addition, INE sources indicated to Europa Press that since the survey was conducted between April and June, does not include the deepest phase of the recession, bringing the percentage of households with problems to finish the month would probably above 60% in the second half 2008.
The families which are to meet their payments last year were the Canary Islands, with 78.3%, followed by Andalusia (69.9%), Murcia (67.3%), Castilian-La Mancha (65.9% ), Extremadura (64.4%), Catalonia (61.4%), Cantabria (61.2%) and Valencia (60.6%).
Below average, affected households were located in Galicia (59.6%), Madrid (56.7%), Ceuta and Melilla (54.8%), La Rioja (54.7%), Baleares ( 53.7%), Castilla y León (51.6%), Asturias (43.3%), Basque Country (41.6%), Aragon (41.1%) and Navarra (37.4%).
In addition, 19.6% of the Spanish population was under the relative poverty line -60% of average earnings, regardless of possession of the premises, a rate that is reduced to 15.5% if the rental value accused.
