The number of unemployed in the UK between September and November recorded a decline of 7,000 people, representing the first decline in unemployment since the quarter ended in May 2008, according to the British Office for National Statistics, which reported that the unemployment rate held steady at 7.8%, with 2.46 million people unemployed.
On the other hand, the number of jobless Britons claiming unemployment benefits declined by 15,200 people to 1,610,000, representing the second consecutive monthly decline and the sharpest since April 2007.
However, the number of long-term unemployed increased by 29,000 to a total of 631,000 unemployed, the highest figure since November 1997, while the inactivity rate rose two tenths to 21.2% by reading below the record 23.3% registered in 1983.
