The number of unemployed registered at the offices of the public employment service (INEM old) rose by 124,890 people in January, up 3.1% over December, bringing the total of unemployed passed the historical barrier of the four million , said Tuesday the Ministry of Labour and Immigration.
Specifically, the total number of unemployed reached the end of January the figure of 4,048,493 unemployed, its highest level in comparable historical series, which began in 1996.
The rise in unemployment in January was lower than that experienced in January 2008, the month in which the lists of public employment offices totaled 198,838 more unemployed, which was the largest increase in this month of the entire series. Nevertheless, in January 2009 and are six consecutive months in which increases unemployment in the former Inem.
In the last twelve months, unemployment has increased by 720,692 unemployed, 21.6% more, of which 386,972 are males and 333,720 females, with relative increases of 23.1% and 20.2% respectively.
The Secretary General for Employment, Maravillas Rojo, said in a statement that January is always a "bad month" for employment, to the point that unemployment rises in this month "even in periods of economic growth."
Red called this new surge in unemployment as "very negative", but stressed that, despite this, the trend of slowing growth in unemployment started almost a year ago. However, for Employment acknowledged that "not yet reached the tipping point."
Employment Secretary General recalled that "aware" that this situation requires further action, the Government will publish its proposals for reforming the labor market on Friday, day 5.
