Car registrations fell 23.8% in August, the lowest level since 1989

Car registrations stood at 44,578 units during the month of August, representing a fall of 23.8% over the same month of 2009 and the second consecutive monthly decline, reported associations of manufacturers (Anfac) and sellers ( Ganvam).
The volume of registrations recorded last August was the lowest since at least 1989, the earliest period is no record of enrollment records in the Spanish car market.
In the first eight months of the year, sales of cars and SUVs were at 730,906 units, which translates into an increase of 21.9% over the same period last year thanks to momentum in the first half.
Ganvam Anfac and find that the August data, "unfortunately" corroborates the negative forecasts for the sector announced in the second half of the year. "The industry shows great concern over the negative market developments," they added.
Marketing channels, sales to individuals dropped by 37.3% in August, while purchases by companies not alquiladoras rose 17% in August (+27.1% in the first eight months). The car rental companies maintain their strong growth with increases of 76.5% in August and 73.4% in the full year.
By segment, car sales in August fell in all segments except sports (+32,4%), executive (+8.2%), and small off-road vehicle (+21.1%), SUV means (+11.3%) and luxury SUVs (+5.9%). The biggest drop was for the large carriers (-39.7%) and cars lower-middle segment (-34%).
