Loading ... The European Commission President Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, warned on Friday to the heads of State and Government of the 27 high risk of a new gas crisis "in weeks rather than months" because of the difficulties Ukraine paying for Russian gas. The new crisis could lead to new cuts in supplies to EU countries such as occurred last winter by the confrontation between Moscow and Kiev.
"There truly the risk of another major crisis within weeks rather than months. And we must protect European citizens," Barroso told a news conference at the end of the summit held in Brussels.
He announced that the EU executive has called a meeting for next week with representatives of international financial institutions, European gas companies and representatives of the Member States to try to agree a "package of short-term funding" for Ukraine. But he said a solution must be found "sustainable" and made clear that aid to Kiev can not leave the EU budget.
The Commission president said he has advised the Member States more vulnerable to "take immediate steps to respond to a possible crisis." "We work to achieve the best result but we must be prepared for the worst" he said.

Loading ... Vice President of the Russian gas company Gazprom, Alexander Medvedev, said today that his company has informed the Commission that he was "not possible to send gas to Europe through Ukrainian territory," without specifying the reason, although The company said earlier today in a statement that the gas pumping was resumed.
In addition, Medvedev said at a news conference that Ukraine has continued to enter the Russian observers to the underground reservoirs or the centralized control of the Ukrainian gas network, according to Russian news agency RIA Novosti. But the European Commission has claimed that neither Moscow nor Kiev allow European observers access to gas distribution centers to verify the volume of gas.
He also said that gas supplies from Russia to Europe via Ukraine has not yet been fully resumed. These two events represent a breach of the agreement reached between the three parties to resolve the gas crisis, said Brussels.
Meanwhile, the gas company Naftogaz Ukraine said Tuesday through his spokesman Valentin Zemlianski Ukraine has begun to receive Russian gas destined for European countries. It also demanded in a statement Naftogaz to Gazprom that concretized the volume and route of Russian gas that goes to Europe.
According to the Ukrainian company, its subsidiary Ukrtransgaz last night received a fax from Gazprom in which he confirmed the resumption of gas supply and pumping 76.6 million cubic meters of gas to the Balkans, Turkey and Moldova through the station Soudja.
But Naftogaz said that these volumes have not been concluded in time between the two companies, which contradicts the rules for using transit pipelines. The Ukrainian company also considers it necessary to update the documents establishing the technical operation of the pipeline system and the joint work of regulating services of both countries to ensure the stability of gas transit.
"This will allow the reception of Russian gas on Ukrainian Russian border, and secure transit and restore flow to European consumers," says the statement of Naftogaz.
